Find out about GS1 Link Types and how you can use them with your Digital Links and 2D Barcodes.
When a 2D Barcode is scanned by a retailer at the point of sale, it functions just like a normal UPC or EAN barcode image, displaying the product GTIN number and price. However, when the 2D Barcode is scanned by a smartphone camera or app, it can connect the user to rich digital product information.
This is done via Link Types. A list of Link Types is below. You can set up your own Link Types on our website when you add a new product. You can also select the default link (the default URL that your 2D Barcode will direct to - e.g. a Product Information Page). When your 2D Barcode is scanned, our IBN Link Resolver service will unpack the information in your Digital Link. It will direct the user to the most appropriate endpoint set up in the Link Types (e.g. to product information in their own language, or to a promotion).
Scan this 2D Barcode on your phone to view a sample product page. When you scroll to the bottom of that page, you will see the various Link Types that have been set up for that product.
Some of the most common Link Types are below (click here to see the complete list).
Product Information Page (gs1:pip) - A link to information specifically about the identified item.
Sustainability and recycling (gs1:sustainabilityInfo) - A link to information relating to sustainability and recycling requirements or processes.
