Link Types

Find out about GS1 Link Types and how you can use them with your Digital Links and 2D Barcodes.

What are Link Types?

Link Types allow direct different scans of the same 2D Barcode to be directed to different places.

When a 2D Barcode is scanned by a retailer at the point of sale, it functions just like a normal UPC or EAN barcode image, displaying the product GTIN number and price. However, when the 2D Barcode is scanned by a smartphone camera or app, it can connect the user to rich digital product information.

This is done via Link Types. A list of Link Types is below. You can set up your own Link Types on our website when you add a new product. You can also select the default link (the default URL that your 2D Barcode will direct to - e.g. a Product Information Page). When your 2D Barcode is scanned, our IBN Link Resolver service will unpack the information in your Digital Link and direct the user to the most appropriate endpoint set up in the Link Types (e.g. to product information in their own language, or to a promotion).

What are the most common Link Types?

Some of the most common Link Types are below (a full list is at the bottom of this page). .

Product Information Page (gs1:pip) - A link to information specifically about the identified item.

Sustainability and recycling (gs1:sustainabilityInfo) - A link to information relating to sustainability and recycling requirements or processes.

Nutritional Information (gs1:nutritionalInfo)

How to set up Link Types for your product

Go to the Add a Product page in your dashboard and add your product details (GTIN number, product name, category, description etc). At the bottom of the form complete the PRODUCT LINKS section:

Link Type - choose the Link Type(s) you want (e.g. Product Information Page)

URL - enter the URL of the webpage you want the link to direct to (this will usually be a URL on your own website - you may to need to create a new page on your website with the relevant information on it).

The URL may look something like: https://yourcompany.com/yourproductname/

Content Type - select the content type (e.g. "Web Page")

Language - select the language that the content / web page is in.

Title of the content / web page

Default Link  (Yes / No)- The default link is the URL that the resolver redirects to when there are no better matches available. When your customers scan the QR Code they will usually be directed to whichever URL you choose to select as the default link - this is usually the Product Information Page.

How to set Link Types in different languages

If you want to provide product information (via Link Types) in multiple languages, then you'll need to create separate pages on your website for each language and Link Type (e.g. you could create two "Product Information" pages, one in English and one in Portuguese). When the product's 2D Barcode is scanned, the user will then be directed to information in their own language (this depends on which default language is set up on the user's phone).
