By 2027, brands worldwide are expected to add 2D barcodes to their product packaging.
Consumers are increasingly demanding more information about the products they buy.
In response, the barcode industry has set an ambitious goal: by the end of 2027, all retail point-of-sale (POS) systems should be able to scan 2D barcodes based on GS1 standards, alongside the traditional linear barcodes.
2D barcodes, like QR codes and DataMatrix codes, can store far more information than traditional linear barcodes. They are also scannable at checkout (they go “beep” just like traditional barcodes), but with added capabilities. Key benefits include:
Compact but Powerful: 2D barcodes can include a product identifier (GTIN) plus data like batch numbers, expiration dates, and serial numbers - all in a smaller space.
Connect to the Web: They can link to digital content, such as product details, how-to guides, promotions, or safety instructions.
Enable Automation: Data can be automatically captured and used for inventory management, safety checks, and personalized marketing.
Even though 1D barcodes have served well for decades, 2D barcodes offer a powerful upgrade:
Improved Product Safety: Prevent expired or recalled products from being sold by including batch or lot information.
Smarter Inventory Management: Use date-based discounts, automatic markdowns, and stock tracking.
Stronger Brand Trust: Provide accurate, up-to-date information directly to consumers.
More Data, Smaller Space: Ideal for small products with limited packaging real estate.
Resilient and Reliable: Built-in error correction makes them easier to scan, even if partially damaged.
Is Switching to 2D Barcodes Mandatory by 2027?
No, it’s not mandatory. However, the industry is moving in that direction to future-proof retail operations and meet growing demands.
Yes, our 2D Barcode system and Resolver are fully compliant with GS1 Barcode specifications.
Can I Use a 2D Barcode to Show Only a GTIN?
Yes. You can encode just the product’s GTIN if that’s all you need. But the beauty of 2D barcodes is that you can add more data if you choose.
Will I need two barcodes on my packaging?
Yes - at least during the transition. Until all retailers update their POS systems to recognize 2D barcodes, products will need both the current 1D barcode and the new 2D version. Both must contain the same GTIN.
Are 1D Barcodes being phased out?
Not immediately. 1D barcodes like EAN/UPC will continue to be accepted and used wherever needed. But over time, as retailers adopt 2D scanning, 2D barcodes are expected to become the norm.
How long will the transition last?
The target is for full 2D barcode scanning capability at retail POS systems worldwide by the end of 2027. However, regions and retailers will move at different speeds. Dual-marking (both 1D and 2D) will be necessary for a few years.
Where should I place the 2D Barcode on my packaging?
When adding a 2D barcode alongside your existing linear barcode, place it within 50mm of the center of the linear barcode, including any quiet zones. This ensures both codes can be scanned efficiently at checkout.
